New teleconference on CMI-5

Due to the overwhelming demand generated by the first CMI-5 teleconference, on Friday, March 18th at 10:00 AM (Eastern time) another teleconference will be held that introduces the details of the latest standard for courseware communication, CMI-5. The new standard incorporates advances in CMI architecture proposed from multiple organizations into one coherent standard. The goal of the new standard is to simplify and update CMI standards to reflect changes in technology and content distribution practice and to provide a user-definable set of data elements and the option to manage content sequencing by the administrative system. AICC to host two presentations at WATS conference

The AICC will be hosting two presentations at the upcoming Worldwide Aviation Training Symposium (WATS) at the Rosen Shingle Creek resort in Orlando, FL. The first presentation, Unleashing the Power(Point), will be a panel discussion with airlines and vendors will discuss the pros and cons of using PowerPoint as an authoring tool. They will share their first hand experiences and give advice on developing presentations geared for training, for re-purposing presentations that have already been developed, for distributing PowerPoint and PowerPoint-derived content, and strategies for capturing completion results in an LMS. In the second presentation, Focus on Mobile and e-Learning for Air Carriers, Captain Herbert Schwarz, Austrian Airlines, and Chair of the Aviation Industry Computer Based Training Committee (AICC), will moderate a panel of experts discussing how to reduce cost (but not quality) for air carrier Learning Management Systems (LMS) and the role of iPads and other tablet/smartphone devices now entering the cockpit.

AICC Announces New Small Company Membership Level

Federal Way, WA, December 13, 2010 - The Airline Industry CBT Committee (AICC) announces a new membership level designed to encourage small companies and individuals to join the Committee. The new small company membership level applies to companies with 50 or fewer employees and costs $500 per year. This membership level provides all the rights and privileges as the corporate and airline company memberships including participating in standards and best practices development subcommittees, voting on Committee business, and holding executive office. The new membership level was created in response to changes in the eLearning marketplace, with small companies becoming much more prominent in new courseware and LMS development. According to AICC Executive Committee member and CEO of Hybrid Learning Systems Kris Rockwell, “With the old membership levels in place, it was really difficult for smaller companies to afford to get involved with the AICC; it was prohibitively expensive. It’s pretty easy for a big company to absorb a $2,500 membership fee, but for a small company, it becomes a choice between membership or a new developer’s workstation. This new membership level enables smaller groups to participate at a much more affordable cost.” AICC Chairman Herbert Schwarz added, “The ideas and experiences small companies bring to the table are just as relevant and important as those from the big companies. In many cases, these smaller companies were started by folks that got involved with AICC when they worked for a large firm but when they moved on to a smaller company, they could no longer afford to participate. This new membership level changes all of that and will allow smaller companies and individuals to help develop the next generation of eLearning standards and best practices.” As an added incentive for small companies to get involved, new members will be given up to 6 additional months on their memberships. For new members that join from December 10th, 2010 to May 31st, 2011, their membership year will be calculated as starting on June 1, 2011. AICC Announces New Standard

The Aviation Industry CBT/eLearning Committee (AICC) announces the start of development on the first major elearning data exchange specification since 2004. This specification will greatly expand on the widely used data exchange specifications from both the AICC and the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative’s SCORM specification, and adds the ability to integrate group learning activities, simulations and custom learner interfaces with learning management systems. The specification will supersede the existing AICC computer managed instruction specification and is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2012. The current data exchange specification is used in the development of both elearning content and learning management systems (LMS). It defines the way the two systems communicate so elearning can be launched from and the results sent to an LMS. When it was introduced in 1993, the specification was the first effort at standardizing that data communication, allowing trainers to more easily integrate elearning courseware without custom development. The new specification is being developed in response to changes in the elearning landscape with advances in technology and adoption of different methods of content delivery. The new specification will replace the existing AICC specification which was last updated in 1998. According to AICC Computer Managed Instruction Subcommittee Chairman William A. McDonald, “Over the years, we had many requests to update our data exchange specification but held off knowing that any change would have profound results for all previously certified titles and applications, many of which had been designed for compliance with either the AICC standard or SCORM. The AICC and the ADL have tried to harmonize the two standards but when that effort stalled, we decided to move forward. That requires a completely new approach and that means a completely new data specification.” According to Ed Cohen, Chairman of the Training Infrastructure Committee of the AICC, “This is huge. This will not only supersede our own CMI (computer managed instruction) specification, but will define the way courseware and management systems communicate from here forward.” While the new specification will replace existing specifications that have been used for years, there will be consideration for re-tooling or adapting legacy courseware. Mr. Cohen commented, “We know there’s a ton of courseware out there and it would be cost-prohibitive to force authors to re-develop their titles just because of this specification. However, the LMS providers will be moving forward with adoption pretty rapidly once it’s released, so we need to develop a way to allow legacy titles to still share data while newer courseware can benefit from the expanded capabilities of the new standard.” The AICC has been helping the aviation industry (as well as many others) get the most out of training technologies since 1988. As AICC Chairman Capt. Herbert Schwarz commented, “The AICC has always created solutions for the industry that solve real problems in a very usable manner. Since we are a volunteer consortium of manufacturers, courseware authors, vendors and users, our standards reflect the best that all sides offer so that all can benefit. This new specification, although just a part of the overall elearning infrastructure, will be critical for the future and will help insure interoperability between courseware and LMSs.” Work on the specification has already begun and is being managed as a joint project between several AICC subcommittees. The AICC will host an LMS implementation discussion session at the upcoming European Aviation Training Symposium (EATS) at the WOW Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey on November 10th, 2010. The discussion will feature industry experts as well as representatives from aviation companies that have implemented LMS applications. They will discuss the good and the bad and will discuss best practices and lessons learned. The AICC will also have an exhibit staffed with representatives that can provide information about the mission and activities of the AICC and the benefits of becoming a member. Universal eLearning Data Standards Meeting Announced

The Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC) announces a summit meeting to discuss harmonizing Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) data models will be held on September 7th and 8th, 2010. The summit meeting will bring together representatives from the AICC, from the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL), from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the International Federation for Learning, Education, and Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI) to discuss the current state of CMI specifications and to discuss the harmonization across the different organizations. The summit meeting will be held at the ADL Hub Co-Laboratory in Alexandria, VA. The summit will, for the first time, bring together the organizations that are the most influential for standards in the eLearning industry to solve problems that have plagued developers and training organizations alike. “There have been a lot of changes in the industry over the last few years and we really need to decisively move forward on the standards issue” said Ed Cohen, Chief Technical Officer of Plateau Systems and Chairman of the AICC Training Infrastructure Subcommittee. “eLearning is no longer a novelty, it’s become the standard for courseware delivery and companies need the flexibility to mix courseware and systems from different vendors. Without a universal data standard, that flexibility is lost and the industry, as a whole, suffers.” The summit will be a two-day meeting with day one focused on working discussions of the harmonization issues and day two focused on a mix of discussions and presentations of existing standards progress and new technologies. The summit meeting will be held at the ADL Hub Co-Laboratory at 1901 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA, 22311 and is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Press Release: Second Life and Aviation Training Innovations

At Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) meetings in Stuttgart, Germany, Aeroflot demonstrated innovative use of Second Life to support aviation training. Meeting sessions addressed many emerging technologies for training and advances in learning technology standards as applied to aviation.

Additional presentations by leading researchers and innovative suppliers addressed social learning, international technology standards for training, and solutions for emerging issues facing the aviation community. Aeroflot demonstrated live users of Second Life interacting with each other and natural language processing chat bots to refine radio communications and ICAO English for pilots. Many AICC presentations like this have direct applications in the larger Learning, Education and Training (LET) community.

The AICC Meeting in Stuttgart looks to be a very popular and interesting meeting for aviation training and training technology. Registrations are already well over expectations. The agenda has grown beyond full and AICC has had to defer some administrative presentations in order to accommodate more guest presenters.

Stuttgart hotels are filling up, but the recommended hotels have extended their special rates until September 7, 2009. Please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. AICC meetings are open to all interested parties. Representatives of member organizations in good standing (i.e., have paid their annual membership dues), meeting speakers, and airlines, will not be charged for participation. AICC voting members, observer members, and invited guest speakers will not be charged a fee. Non-members will need to pay a $150 USD fee as part of the registration process.

Call for Presentations
The AICC welcomes presentations on aviation training case studies and success stories, lessons learned, emerging technologies, and emerging needs for training and training systems. Past presenters have included representatives from airlines, aviation, research organizations, regulatory agencies, technology, software and service suppliers.

Draft AICC Offline CMI Specification CMI-009 Now Available for Comment

The AICC has released Draft 2.4 of its Offline CMI Specification (CMI-009) for review and comment as per discussions in the Feb 2009 AICC Singapore meeting. CMI-009 defines a communication mechanism that allows server-based ("Online") LMS systems to sychronize with client-based ("Offline") LMS players so that nomadic learners can view training content while disconnected from the internet and still have LMS tracking. International Aviation Training Conference February 2009

The AICC is meeting in Singapore on February 24-27, 2009 at the Alteon Singapore Training Center. There is an open call for sessions on innovation in aviation training and related technologies. Selected topics will be presented during meeting sessions on February 24-26, 2009.

Airlines, aviation suppliers, and government agencies are encouraged to use this opportunity to showcase their learning organizations, learning programs, and initiatives that may be of interest to their peers in aviation.

Software vendors, providers of training services and technologies supporting learning, training and e-learning for aviation are also encouraged to participate. Suggested topics include case studies, project reviews or advance technology demonstrations in the areas of:

ICAO English
Crew coordination
Recurrent training
Workforce development planning and management
Authoring, media development, content management, and learning support systems
Metric and assessments
Deployment technology, including mobile learning and EFB (Electronic Flight Bag)
International specifications and standards relating to learning and training

Mumbai Meetings to be Rescheduled

The AICC would like to express our sincere condolences over the recent events in Mumbai and extend our sympathies to those who have suffered. These terrible events and the resulting changes in travel policies and restrictions for members, and anticipated processing times for visas have all had a negative impact on our shared plans.

After much thoughtful discussion within the AICC, the Executive Committee made the decision to defer meeting in Mumbai until a later date in order to make it a more effective and productive meeting for everyone. The AICC would like very much to reschedule Mumbai as international venue in the near future and hope that we can work with our local members to arrange this in an upcoming year.

The previous agenda will remain available online with suitable notation, so that those who have made travel arrangements can contact the hotel.

If necessary, the AICC may schedule a contingency meeting to sustain business continuity. No decisions or arrangements have been made.

A limited number of presentation slots are still available for the January 2009 meetings in Mumbai. Presentation proposals may be submitted effective immediately. The final deadline is December 19, 2008.

Providers of training services and technologies supporting learning & training and e-learning for aviation are also encouraged to participate. This may include case studies or advance technology demonstrations in the areas of authoring, media development, content management, learning management, assessments systems, deployment. mobile systems and other areas.

AICC Meetings January 2009 in Mumbai

It is time to start making your arrangements for the next AICC meeting to be held Mumbai, India hosted by Hurix Learning. To assure your ability to participate we urge you to begin making travel plans now to allow adequate time for visa and other requirements. Preliminary information is available immediately from the AICC Meeting Information page. Additional details will be posted as they become available in the next week or two.

Summary Information for Mumbai Meetings

Meeting Schedule: Tuesday January 20, 2009 - Friday January 23, 2009. Meeting sessions start at 8:00 am and run until 5:00 pm most days. Note that this set of meetings will begin on Tuesday in order to better accommodate international travel,

Meeting Logistics: All AICC Subcommittee Meetings will be held at the offices of Hurix Learning, Mumbai India. Transportation to the meeting will be provided from the meeting hotel to the meeting location. Dress is business casual.

Lodging: As of November 8, 2008, Hurix is currently negotiating hotel rates. The hotel information will follow in subsequent announcements.

Registration: Non-members of AICC will be charged $150 to attend the meeting. Representatives of member organizations in good standing (i.e., have paid their annual membership dues) will not be charged.

Business Visa Requirements and Health information: A Business Visa is needed for those who are doing business in India such as making sales or establishing contacts on behalf of a company outside of India. An application can be completed online. A sponsor letter from an organization in India is also needed.

Please see the preliminary meeting information for additional details on visa, sponsor letter and travel information. Please allow 4-6 weeks for visa processing.

Electronic versions of the presentations and the meeting minutes from the AICC September 2008 Louisville meetings are available online. See the AICC Louisville Meeting Minutes page for the minutes and a link to all of the available online presentations.

The next AICC meeting is scheduled for January 2009 in Mumbai. As an international organization, the AICC always encourages participation from across the globe.

For the January meeting, the AICC is particularly interested in ideas, topics and presentations from organizations in the Pan-Pacific and Indian Ocean areas.

Suggestions for discussion topics and presentation proposals should be sent to presentations@aicc.org for review.

Though membership is encouraged, presenters do not need to be AICC members. Typically, meeting attendance fees are waived for guest presenters. As always, representatives from AICC Voting Members and Observer Members may attend meetings free of charge. Non-members are always welcome to attend any general session of the AICC and can chose to pay a nominal meeting fee instead of annual membership.

The meeting logistics and schedule for January are being confirmed by the meeting host. Details will be posted here in approximately two weeks.

X-Plane – Excellent flight simulator available for Mac, Windows and Linux. Currently $39 USD it soon goes back up to $59 USD.

X-Plane for iPhone – As demonstrated by Kris Rockwell during the Mobile Technologies presentation. X-Plane flight simulator that runs on iPhone, pitch and roll controlled by tilting and accelerometers.

Xobni – Email organizer, search, analytics and productivity tool for individuals. Plugin for Microsoft Outlook that calculates average response times, threads conversations and more.

DeviceAnywhere – Test any mobile device on any mobile network with their hosted hardware and software solution. Great for mobile application development and deployment testing.

Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker – Array microphone that tracks / "tunes in" to the current speaker in a conference room. Recommended by a distance education technologist from University of Louisville.

Captionate – Captionate is a Windows application that embeds data into FLV (Flash Video) files. Excellent tool for captioning, closing captioning and using cue points with streaming media.

Celebration — Social networking is even better when celebrating. AICC participants shared ideas, memory and delicious cake during the 20th Anniversary Celebration. Happy Birthday AICC.

AICC Position Paper for SCORM 2.0

During today's meetings we discussed the AICC Position Paper on SCORM 2.0 (click the attachments tab or download link for full paper). Interested parties should visit the page and add their comments to the LETSI wiki before the October 15-17, 2008 LETSI SCORM 2.0 Workshop (sold out). A paper background and summary follows below.

As original contributors to SCORM and as representatives of a community of practice with a great volume of long-lived legacy content, the AICC has submitted this paper expressing our high level requirements for the existing model and for the evolution of SCORM going forward.

The AICC Position Paper addresses 7 major considerations for SCORM evolution:

Maintenance of a data model consistent with the requirements of all communities of practice, or a reliable methodology for profiling to suit the specific needs of any COP.
Creation of a web services based communication protocol.
Modification and simplification of the sequencing model.
Enhanced functionality for capturing assessment data.
Enhanced functionality for mobile computing.
Introduction of portfolio or portable records functionality.
Introduction of functionality for simulation interoperability.

New Podcast and a SlideShare from Stuttgart

The AICC podcast series continues with some vendor perspective provided by Eric Shepherd of Questionmark. In interview format, Eric's responses provide insight on the benefits of participation and the AICC open processes.

Eric and Questionmark have been participating in the AICC for about 10 years, and have also obtained a record number of back-to-back AICC certifications for their product, Questionmark Perception. All that and managing to do hundreds of interoperable integrations across the globe too. Finally, with some prompting from Tom, Eric also chimes in with some tips on fascinating travel destinations that are bound to help support the aviation industry.

AICC Podcast: Peter Morton discusses early issues

This is the first in what we hope to be a sustained series of podcasts from the AICC. It is only appropriate that this first interview is with one of the principal figures in the formation of the AICC.

Peter Morton and his Cirrus

Peter was a prominent figure in the formation of the AICC and was responsible for airline training at Boeing during the 1987-1995 time period. During the interview he shares memories of the formation of the AICC, including the interoperability and proprietary platform issues of the time. Please listen to this 12 minute podcast to learn about the AICC, the CBT of the late 1980s and Peter's memories of Boeing 777 CBT development. At the end of the interview, Peter admits he was initially surprised that the AICC is still active, and then upon reflection expresses his thoughts on the surprising longevity, and future, of the AICC.

AICC Survey on Training Evaluation and Technology Trends

In its continuing quest to keep its “finger on the pulse” of the aviation training community, the AICC announces a new survey on Training Evaluation and Technology Trends.

So, what is your position on learning from a virtual experience as opposed to a physical one? Can someone learn to maintain an aircraft in a virtual world, or is “getting your hands dirty” a necessary part of the learning process? Or, how do you feel about the claim that the younger generation “learns differently” than the baby boomers? These are two of the issues on which the AICC seeks your feedback and opinion.

Of course, one source of information on questions such as these is findings from training research. So, part of our survey addresses the training evaluation processes and approaches that you use, as well as the technologies and interventions you have studied.

With only 11 questions, this survey is one you can probably complete over your coffee break. But if you try to complete it by getting consensus from a group of your training experts, it may take quite a bit longer!

As always, the AICC appreciates your help in this survey on training evaluation approaches and technology trends and issues. Group summary results will be available on the AICC website in the near future.

AICC forms Committee on Authorware Concerns

The AICC will be working jointly with Adobe to consolidate concerns, priorities, solutions and information relating to sustaining and migrating Authorware content. The committee will establish community teleconferences and web-based workspaces for the developer, consumer and vendor communities to collaborate.

An initial teleconference will be held in February 2008, and a notice will be placed here on the AICC News Blog and on other elearning community sites.

AICC PENS AGR-011 Available in French

To further facilitate international adoption, the AICC Package Exchange Notification Services (PENS) AGR document has been translated to French. AICC Guidelines and Recommendations (AGRs) represent the official voice of the AICC with respect to a designated area. All AGRs, including AGR-011 for PENS, have been formally voted upon and approved by the general voting membership of the AICC.

The AICC expresses special thanks to Marc Van Coillie of EIfEL, and Bernard Bouyt and Jean-Louis Bravo of Airbus for their gracious volunteer efforts to translate this document. The PENS AGR summarizes the protocol and provides a rationale for advocating its use. Availability of this document "en francais" will help the shared efforts of the AICC and the European Institute for E-Learning to support interoperability demonstrations at iLearning Forum 2008 in Paris.

The AICC will host a half-day ADL-AICC-LETSI Workshop on Content Aggregation for Core SCORM on Friday, February 1, 2008 in conjunction with the AICC meeting in San Jose, California. Call for Participation: New CSA Initiative to Use Web Service for

The CSA (Content Services Architecture) initiative is a new AICC work group that is developing a set of specifications to drive adoption of interoperable web services to support learning and training. Participation in the CSA work group is open to any organization wishing to join. Note that membership is by company/organization and not by individual.

CSA will specify web services that facilitate integration of hosted content, data and content catalog synchronization between publisher (Content Management) and content consumer systems such as a LMS (learning management system). CSA web services will also support a variety of access control and commerce models to integrate content-as-a-service and LMS-as-a-service capabilities. With CSA specifications, content on different internet domains can work seamlessly with a Learning Management System (LMS) in a different internet domain through web services.

The success of this forward-looking initiative depends on strong participation from the elearning community and the AICC greatly needs your help. If you are a LMS (Learning Management System) vendor, CMS (Content Management System) vendor, content creation tool vendor, or an organization that is a content consumer you are encouraged to get involved. Much preliminary work has been done and preliminary input is already being gathered for initial draft documents. The AICC also hosts a CSA Discussion Forum online as a point for collaboration.

AICC and ADL Announce Plans for Collaboration

The ADL initiative and the AICC announced their plans to collaborate on several near-term and longer term projects. This collaboration was launched at a joint meeting during the Boeing-hosted AICC conference the week of September 24th 2007. The purpose of the collaboration is to assist the aerospace and defense learning community by providing guidelines which promote the economic and effective implementation of technology-supported learning, education, and training. Benefits for the learning community will be achieved by promoting interoperability standards that software vendors can use across multiple industries (not limited to aerospace & defense).

Both organizations have committed to collaborating with other organizations involved with various learning communities. The collaborative activities will be coordinated with LETSI – an international federation promoting Learning Education and Training Systems Interoperability.

The Passing of Philip Dodds

We are greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Philip Dodds, one of our most significant contributors to the world of learning technology. Trying to sum up Phillip's contributions seems almost trite. It is enough to say that he truly touched every aspect of the learning technology world and had an impact on every member of the community. His vision and leadership can not be forgotten and his legacy will live on, reflected and shining each time a learner logs on.

For those of us carrying forward, we hope only that we can do justice to Philip's legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Philip's family and friends and we join together to say God's speed.

The Passing of Philip V.W. Dodds

Artist, inventor, innovator, collaborator and colleague Philip V.W. Dodds passed away on Saturday morning. Please help me recognize and celebrate his accomplishments and the lives he continues to touch.

I tried to write this yesterday and just couldn't. I truly believe the elearning community would not have SCORM as it is today without Philip's contributions as a visionary thinker, organizer, architect and evangelist. He was a man of art and a man of science. He loved technology, yet took great pride and active participation in true and faithful restorations to his historic home. He was drawing electronic circuits on blackboards at an early age, did R&D at ARP Instruments and Kurzweil Music, and led the charge to make CD-ROMs and sound cards a standard part of personal computers through his efforts with IMA and the MPC "Multimedia PC" standards efforts in the late 80's and early 90's.

I'd encourage you to learn more about him real soon now, courtesy of a page available through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Meantime, here is what Elliott Masie had to share about Philip in a message to the Learning Consortium:

That was a single line, spoken by the sound engineer at the end of Close Encounters of a Third Kind, as he played chords and a friendly alien spaceship played music back.
The role was played by a young sound engineer who was spotted by Steven Spielberg and given the on-screen role to be the interface between these two worlds. That man, Philip Dodds, was still young and inventing, as he passed this Saturday morning.
Philip Dodds was the Chief Architect of SCORM and the force behind sharable and reusable content. He was deeply involved in the evolution of interactive multimedia and expanding the possibilities for learning via technology.
If you use a Learning Management System, author an interactive learning module or talk about the future of Web 2.0, take a moment to thank a man who you probably never met. Philip's work was KEY and CRITICAL to the exciting world of learning, knowledge management and collaboration that we take for granted.
Philip's dreams were to create a global set of standards and specifications that would allow content to be searchable, reusable and expandable.
Philip, we thank you for all that you have done and we'll keep asking that question: "What are we saying to each other?"

AICC Establishes Forum for Adobe Authorware Issues

The AICC has established an open, registration-required, discussion forum for issues relating to the end-of-development for Adobe Authorware. This action has created significant uncertainty and is expected to have significant financial and technical ramifications across many industries. The AICC Authorware End-of-Development Discussion Forum is a place to contribute your feedback, comments and observations for an open letter to Adobe from the training community.

The live discussion at the AICC Meeting has already resulted in a variety of RFP requirements, risk management strategies, conversion strategies, tools & services proposals, and criteria for selection of future and alternative suppliers and technologies. Concerns included avoiding trading one opaque/proprietary format for another, IE7 compatibility, Vista compatibility, and the sheer scope and resource requirements of completely redeveloping content from scratch.

It was generally agreed that partial, but not complete, conversion from Authorware to other formats may be acceptable. Further discussion revealed that individual organizations may have specific categories of content and conversion could likely be "hand-tuned" to increase the fidelity/success with that content. Extra or custom effort to achieve such conversions is considered acceptable.

Some interesting alternatives include migrations from Adobe Authorware to Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS), HTML/DHTML, and/or Microsoft Silverlight rather than Adobe AIR, Director MX 2004, Flash, or Flex.

Participants also called for a prompt response from Adobe regarding their plans for a roadmap, response or guidance-- many organization are currently making development plans, technology selections, and preparing RFPs for this calendar year. Discussion notes are included in the AICC Meeting minutes, which will be posted after this week's meeting conclude on September 27, 2007.

ADL-AICC Workshop on Standards Convergence

Representatives of the organizations responsible for the dominant LMS standards specifications will meet to address critical considerations for convergence and collaboration. General implementers and vendors would likely both benefit from a common approach that leverages the expertise and resources of both ADL and the AICC.

During upcoming AICC meetings, the ADL and AICC will meet on Thursday, September 27, 2007 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Boeing Training and Support Systems facility in St. Louis, Missouri to discuss possible collaboration and convergence on a future release of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM).

Motivating the workshop are the origins of ADL SCORM in the AICC CMI specification, the gradual technical divergence of CMI and SCORM, and the anticipated benefits for both organizations, their constituents and the tremendous number of LMS adopters across the globe.

The workshop occurs in the context of ADL’s interest in progressing SCORM as an ISO/IEC standard. Both ADL and AICC are participating in the formation of a new international collaboration for Learning, Education and Training Systems interoperability (working name: LETSI). In 2008, LETSI will assume responsibility for future maintenance and evolution of the SCORM specification.

The workshop will address aspects of a possible SCORM collaboration, including: implementer requirements, technical coverage, conformance testing, funding and resource requirements, and economic benefits. Workshop participation is open, subject to normal AICC meeting participation guidelines and reasonable meeting host requirements for site access.

Authorware has been very successful and widely adopted by the aviation community. In August of 2007 Adobe announced the End-of-Development for Authorware, and that there are no plans to provide compatibility updates or support for issues relating to using Authorware or Authorware content with Microsoft Windows Vista or Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).

On Tuesday, September 25, 2007, the AICC is hosting a moderated discussion on options for sustaining, converting or migrating Authorware-based content. The shared goal is to ensure the aviation community can continue to delivery timely and effective training from this large content-base. Please join us at the AICC St. Louis meeting in September or submit an email to the discussion moderators if you are interested in sharing or discussing best-practices, processes, technology and concepts around conversion, migration or alternatives.

The Passing of Claude Ostyn

It is with great sadness that we received the news on Monday of the passing of Claude Ostyn. The learning technology community has lost one of its shining lights. Claude has been a major contributor from the earliest days to many many areas of learning technology, from the AICC CMI spec to SCORM to metadata, and most recently in the area of competencies and competency management. It would be a very difficult task indeed to cite all of the contributions Claude has made to our community, but there is no doubt that his legacy and spirit will live on. Claude represented the best of what honest debate and intelligent discourse can produce. Those of you who had the opportunity to work with Claude know this well. He will be surely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Claude's family and friends.

AICC Announces Offline CMI Specification CMI-013

The AICC released a specification that enables learning management system (LMS) vendors to easily integrate with local (offline) LMS players, resulting in a more flexible learning environment for mobile learners. It also allows elearning vendors to use the format for other communication methods. The specification is available as a royalty-free AICC publication from the www.aicc.org web site.

Referred to as XML for CMI Communications (CMI-013), the new specification allows the person taking the course to download online course materials and review the online course completely disconnected from the Internet while being tracked by a local version of an LMS. Similar solutions exist but are proprietary. CMI-013 will allow LMSs to integrate with third-party offline players in a standard way - greatly expanding interoperability. Offline CMI will be an open, data model agnostic, architecture that will work with the AICC/CMI data model, SCORM/IEEE data model, and others as they become available.

The AICC is hosting a Workshop on Content Description & Discovery for Learning. The presentation proposal deadline is April 16th, 2007. Selected presentations will be delivered at AICC Meetings June 4-8, 2007. Qualified presenters are encouraged to submit presentation proposals addressing areas including:

Tools and Best Practices for Metadata Entry & Collection
Automated Metadata Generation
Content Indexing for Search and Discovery
Federated Search
Organizing and Mapping Across Departmental/Organizational Boundaries (taxonomies and vocabularies)

LETSI Prospectus available from AICC

The ADL presented the LETSI Prospectus to the AICC at this week's meetings. The AICC is preparing a formal response regarding its plan to participate. LETSI is the proposed working name for The International Federation for Learning-Education- Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI).

The Prospectus sketches the proposed purpose, structure, governance, funding options and activities of the LETSI collaboration. The anticipated participants are government agencies, organizations developing LET (Learning-Education-Training) specifications or standards, and organizations representing LET communities of practice. Interested organizations are invited to participate in the formation of LETSI.

Aviation & Transportation at Learning 2006

Plugfest Drives Updates to PENS Tools

In response to feedback from the successful PENS Plugfest, the AICC has updated the PENS HTML Test Harness and PHP PENS Command Validator. The updated versions are online now from the PENS Sample HTML page on AICC.ORG. The updates reflect the approval of the CMI-012 Packaging Specification, and clarify the need for independent verification of package contents against the specified package format. See the README file for details.

The very first PENS plugfest ended yesterday and was acknowleged by all as a big sucess. Future PENS Plugfests will be held to address issues and continue to identify best practices. See the presentation (PPT zipped) for details.

The first PENS Plugfest is currently in underway in Vancouver, BC. EEDO, Adobe, Outstart, and QuestionMark were among the vendors working with participants (see picture below). Lab results and vendor presentations are scheduled for tommorrow.

AICC Releases Packaging Specification

The AICC announced the release of its Packaging Specification (document CMI012) today. The specification defines the structure of a ZIP archive for AICC courseware. It is intended to be used in conjuction with other AICC specifications such as PENS (CMI010), AICC/CMI Guidelines (CMI001), and the Offline CMI specification.
